Firriato Chiramonte Inzolia (Bianco) 2011
Reg Price: $16.99
Sale Price: $13.99
You save $3.00!

Country: Italy
Region: Sicily
Varietal: Inzolia

The Chiaramonte dynasty had a long and significant relationship with the island of Sicily. Their own passion for indigenous Sicilian grape varieties and their links to the local culture have led them to undertake a long and arduous period of research and development. Their reward has been to see the unique character and quality of the Inzolia variety granted international recognition.

Tasting Notes: Mellow yet bright straw yellow, almost greenish. Delicate and fine, with a profusion of scents reminiscent of exotic fruit and especially pineapple, mango and papaya, almond, lime, wisteria, iris and acacia that blend delightful hints of Mediterranean herbs. Freshness is the virtue of this wine, which, together with fruit’s concentration, makes it very pleasant and drinkable, lip-smacking and lively; it finally closes with a taste of almond and sea breeze. Fully developed nectar typical of the variety, matchless expression of the lively and dynamic grapes it is made from; it blends its straightforwardness with the crystal-clear and amenable taste profile exalting its remarkable lightness and tanginess.

Food Pairing: It matches well with shrimp and prawn cocktails, fried anchovies, musky octopus and cuttlefish, mussels au gratin. Perfect with noodles and clams, spaghetti with sea urchins, pasta with sardines Sicilian-style, mullet filet on a bed of fava beans, gilthead roasted in salt, amberjack with citrus fruit
Pala ‘I Fiori’ Vermentino 2012

Country: Italy
Region: Sardinia
Varietal: 100% Vermentino

Vermentino is a somewhat underrated white wine, and a lovely alternative to Pinot Grigio and certain Chardonnays.  Vermentino is a Mediterranean white wine grape found mostly in southern Europe, prominently in southern France, northern Italy, Corsica, and Sardinia.  These grapes are used to produce light, alluringly aromatic wines with refreshing acidity and lemon-tinged flavors.  Its history dates back 700 years, and although Spain is thought to be its origin, it is still a debatable topic for grape historians and wine lovers alike.  While Vermentinos from northern Italy (Bolgheri) tend to have a bit more complexity and depth, Sardinian Vermentinos display more crisp, fresh, herbaceous and citrus characteristics.  Pala’s Vermentino displays these characteristics quite accurately.

The Pala winery’s had their first harvest in 1950 in the small town of Serdiana, not far from the Cagliari centre.  Representing the third generation of family running the winery is Mario Pala, who is known as one of the most respected wine producers of Sardinia.  The winery is equipped with the latest technology to preserve the quality and character of the grapes and the terroir.  Pala winery was built with the aspect of the old wine warehouses that are traditional in the Cagliari area.

Tasting Notes: The Pala “I Fiori” Vermentino is straw colored, with subtle hints of herbs on the nose, followed by peach and pear.  On the palate, the wine has firm acidic structure. It is round and harmonious with luscious fruit, yet is so crisp and fresh, followed by a lovely, lingering finish.  Vermentino can be paired with seafood dishes, soups, broths, poultry, and risottos.  This wine is perfect for the Spring, and can be enjoyed with or without food. Sitting outside in the beautiful sunshine, savoring every crisp, fresh sip of this wine will leave you with an excellent frame of mind and a smile that will not soften.
